Don’t we all just crave a good horror film every now and then? There’s no better excuse to indulge in a bit of self-procured fear than Halloween night!
In the seemingly inexhaustible ocean of poorly written, poorly executed horror movies that hit the Netflix shelves year after year, we’ve handpicked the top 5 must-sees scarer of 2018. So far at least.
5- Annihilation
Who made it: Alex Garland (Ex Machina)
Who’s in it: Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tessa Thompson
Probably not exactly a horror, more like a sci-fi movie, but it makes the top because of its scary component. Natalie Portman, a scientist, travels beyond a mysterious shimmery screen that suddenly appears out of the blue in the middle of nowhere. What she and her team find behind it is mind-bending, and mysterious.

4 – Apostle
Who’s made it: Gareth Evans
Who’s in it: Dan Stevens, Lucy Boynton, Michael Sheen
Set at the turn of the century (the previous one), this period piece tells the story of a man who sets out to an island to retrieve his kidnapped sister. He’ll walk right into a cult run by ex convicts, and witnesses the unraveling of their madness. A really engaging film, although not everyone’s cup of tea, and definitely not for the squeamish – gore and violence galore.

3 – The ritual
Who’s made it: David Bruckner
Who’s in it: Rafe Spall, Arsher Ali, Robert James-Collier
After the tragic and violent death of ‘one of the lads’, a group of four friends decide to go for a hiking trip in the Swedish wilderness. As they walk into the forest… Yes, you think you know the rest, but rest assured that although this film doesn’t come up with anything particularly original in terms of plot, you’ll be hiding under your blanket as the events unfold. Well shot and well played Netflix production.

2 – Suspiria
Who’s made it: Luca Guadagnino
Who’s in it: Dakota Johnson, Tilda Swinton, Mia Goth
Guadagnino attempts a brave feat, that of replicating the original masterpiece by fellow Italian Dario Argento, and he no doubt succeeds. A bit of a commitment, this 2.5 hours horror tells the story of the young women who attend an elite Berlin dance school. As the tension grows, the girls begin suspecting the truth about the revered institution. Unmissable, and don’t worry, it’s in English

1 – Hereditary
Who’s made it: Ari Aster
Who’s in it: Toni Collette, Gabriel Byrne, Milly Shapir
An absolutely chilling piece of work, with a few turns you won’t see coming. A bit of a slow start as we witness the passing of a loved and hated family matriarch (Colette’s mother), and a progressive shift of the focus on the kids in the family. The unveiling of some of grandma’s most hidden secrets quickens the pace to a bone-chilling end.
